MSNBC Weekday Prime Tops FOX News and CNN in A18-49 for the 2nd Straight Month in June 2017

June 2017 HIGHLIGHTS

MSNBC total day (M-F 6am-6am) topped CNN in total viewers during the time period for the 4th straight month and delivered its best month ever.

MSNBC total day posted its best A25-54 since November 2012.

MSNBC weekday prime (M-F 8-11pm) topped CNN in A25-54 and in total viewers, marking prime’s 7th straight month over CNN in total viewers.
Among all cable networks, weekday prime ranked #4 in A25-54, just behind TBSC, USA and FOX News.

In total viewers, weekday prime ranked #2 among all cable networks, just behind FOX News.

In A18-49, weekday prime ranked #1 in the time period for the 2nd straight month.

MSNBC weekday prime averaged 2.1 million total viewers (ahead of CNN’s 1.2 million), 348,000 viewers A18-49 (ahead of CNN’s 307,000 and FOX News’ 337,000), and 502,000 viewers A25-54 (ahead of CNN’s 394,000).

MSNBC M-Su prime (M-Su 8-11pm) beat third-place CNN in the time period for A18-49 for the 2nd straight month, in A25-54 for the 4th straight month, and in total viewers for the 5th straight month.

MSNBC prime averaged 1.8 million total viewers (ahead of CNN’s 1.1 million), 281,000 viewers A18-49 (tying CNN’s 281,000), and 399,000 viewers A25-54 (ahead of CNN’s 359,000).

MSNBC dayside (9am-5pm) posted its best total viewer delivery ever in the time period. It also delivered its best A25-54 (since November 2012).

Dayside was up +76% among total viewers over June 2016, the closest to CNN since Dec. 2012. Dayside ranked #4 in total viewers among all of cable networks in the time period, up from #10 in June 2016.

“Morning Joe” (6-9am) bested CNN in three key demos: A18-49, A25-54 and total viewers, marking the show’s 28th straight month over CNN in total viewers.

In A18-49, “Morning Joe” was up +55% from June 2016 (vs. CNN’s +53%) its best A18-49 delivery since November 2008. In A25-54, it was up +58% (vs. FOX News’ +53%) over June 2016. In total viewers, “Morning Joe” was up +60% (vs. CNN’s +36% and FOX News’ +40%) over June 2016.

“Morning Joe” averaged 1.05 million total viewers (ahead of CNN’s 657,000), 167,000 viewers A18-49 (ahead of CNN’s 162,000), and 252,000 viewers A25-54 (ahead of CNN’s 238,000).

“MSNBC Live with Stephanie Ruhle” (9-10am) beat CNN in total viewers for the 5th straight month. The show also delivered its best A18-49 delivery since November 2008 and largest A25-54 delivery in the hour since November 2012. The program posted a growth of +79% in A25-54 over June 2016.

“MSNBC Live with Stephanie Ruhle” averaged 985,000 total viewers, the best total viewer delivery in the hour ever, 147,000 viewers A18-49, and 208,000 viewers A25-54.

“Andrea Mitchell Reports” (12-1pm) delivered its best A18-49 delivery in the hour since November 2016, highest A25-54 since November 2016, and largest audience in the hour ever.

“Andrea Mitchell Reports” averaged 865,000 total viewers, the best audience delivery in the hour ever, 131,000 viewers A18-49 and 170,000 viewers A25-54.

“Hardball with Chris Matthews” (7-8pm) topped third-ranked CNN among total viewers for the 11th straight month.

“Hardball” averaged 1.66 million total viewers. The program also averaged 255,000 viewers A18-49 and 359,000 viewers A25-54.

“All In With Chris Hayes” (8-9pm) beat CNN in both A25-54 and in total viewers for the hour, marking the show’s 7th straight month beating CNN in total viewers.

“All In” averaged 1.84 million total viewers, the best total viewer delivery in the time period since November 2008. The program also averaged 300,000 viewers A18-49 and 436,000 viewers A25-54.

“All In” delivered its best cable news share ever at 8pm among total viewers.

“All In’s” growth topped the competition in total viewers (+67% vs. CNN’s +29% and FOX News’ -4%), A18-49 (+81% vs. CNN’s +42% and FOX News’ +14%) and in A25-54 (+78% vs. CNN’s +45% and FOX News’ +21%) over June 2016.

“The Rachel Maddow Show” (9-10pm) is #1 in A18-49, A25-54 and total viewers across all cable news at 9pm. This is the 4th consecutive month that “Maddow” is #1 in A18-49 and A25-54, and the 2nd straight month the program topped FOX News and CNN in total viewers.

The program averaged 2.6 million total viewers (ahead of CNN’s 1,156,000 and FOX News’ 2,547,000), 443,000 viewers A18-49 (vs. CNN’s 313,000 and FOX News’ 332,000), and 626,000 viewers A25-54 (ahead of CNN’s 394,000 and FOX News’ 519,000).

“Maddow’s” growth topped the competition in total viewers (+81% vs. CNN’s +19% and FOX News’ +5%), A18-49 (+87% vs. CNN’s +24% and FOX News’ +14%) and in A25-54 (+91% vs. CNN’s +27% and FOX News’ +22%) over June 2016.

“The Last Word with Lawrence O’Donnell” (10-11pm) finished June 2017 as the #1 cable news show in A18-49 for the 2nd month in a row in the time period. It also bested CNN in both A25-54 and total viewers, marking “The Last Word’s” 25th straight month beating CNN.

“The Last Word” averaged 2.2 million total viewers, the best total viewer delivery in the time period ever. The program also averaged 339,000 viewers A18-49 and 499,000 viewers A25-54.

“The Last Word” posted its best total viewer delivery ever in the time period.

“The Last Word’s” growth topped the competition in total viewers (+81% vs. CNN’s +25% and FOX News’ +35%), A18-49 (+70% vs. CNN’s +27% and FOX News’ +17%) and in A25-54 (+86% vs. CNN’s +34% and FOX News’ +36%) over June 2016.

“The 11th Hour with Brian Williams” (11pm-12am) was the #1 cable news show in the hour in both A18-49 and total viewers for the 2nd straight month. It also beat CNN in A25-54.

“The 11th Hour” averaged 1.58 million total viewers. The program also averaged 263,000 viewers A18-49 and 367,000 viewers A25-54.

Saturday editions of “AM Joy” (10am-12pm) bested CNN in total viewers for the 4th straight month. “AM Joy” posted more growth than the competition in total viewers (+79% vs. CNN’s +8% and FOX News’ +23%), A18-49 (+90% vs. CNN’s +22% and FOX News’ +72%) and in A25-54 (+90% vs. CNN’s +31% and FOX News’ +54%) over June 2016. “AM Joy” averaged 988,000 total viewers – the best total viewer cable news share ever for MSNBC in the time period – 152,000 viewers A18-49, and 226,000 viewers A25-54.

For its Sunday editions, “AM Joy’s” growth more than doubled the competition in total viewers (+75% vs. CNN’s +14% and FOX News’ +17%), A18-49 (+92% vs. CNN’s +41% and FOX News’ +23%) and in A25-54 (+94% vs. CNN’s +31% and FOX News’ +22%) over June 2016. “AM Joy” averaged 819,000 total viewers, 148,000 viewers A18-49, and 213,000 viewers A25-54.
